Terms of Service

Last updated: July 2, 2026

These Terms govern your use of Trove, a household finance tool available at householdtrove.com (the "Service"). By signing up or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

1. Who we are

Trove is operated by an individual sole-proprietor based in Canada. References to "we", "us", and "Trove" refer to the operator. References to "you" refer to the person using the Service.

2. The Service

Trove is a web application for tracking household income, expenses, savings, and debt. Your transaction data is stored locally in your browser, and optionally synced to your own cloud-storage account — we do not host your transactions on our servers. The Service is provided through your browser at the URL above.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use Trove. By signing up, you confirm you meet this requirement.

4. Account registration

To use the paid features of the Service you'll create an account using your email address. You can sign in by magic link, by email and password, or by Google. If you set a password, you're responsible for keeping it secure; if you use magic link or Google, you're responsible for keeping access to the underlying account secure. If you suspect unauthorised access to your Trove account, email us at support@householdtrove.com.

5. Free trial

New accounts get a 14-day free trial with full access to the Service. No card is required to start the trial. When the trial ends, you'll need to subscribe to continue using cloud-sync features. You can still use the local-only browser experience at no cost.

6. Subscription and billing

  • Subscriptions are billed in advance through our payment processor. Pricing is shown at checkout and on the pricing page.
  • Billing recurs automatically each period until you cancel.
  • You authorise us, through our payment processor, to charge your payment method for each renewal.
  • If a payment fails, we may retry the charge and pause cloud-sync features until payment is restored.

7. Cancellation

You can cancel your subscription at any time from the Manage My Trove → Account section, which opens a billing portal hosted by our payment processor. Cancellation stops future renewals; you retain access through the end of the billing period you've already paid for.

8. Refunds

We do not offer refunds for partial billing cycles. If you believe you've been charged in error, contact us and we'll review the situation.

9. Your data, your responsibility

You own your data. Your transactions live in your browser and (if you enable cloud sync) in your own cloud-storage account. We have no copy and cannot recover them for you if they're lost.
  • You are responsible for backing up your data. Enabling cloud sync is the recommended way.
  • If you clear your browser data without having enabled cloud sync, your local data is gone — we cannot retrieve it.
  • If you delete your synced file from your cloud-storage account, your synced data is gone — we cannot retrieve it.

10. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any illegal purpose
  • Reverse-engineer, scrape, or attempt to disrupt the Service
  • Share your account credentials with others
  • Use the Service to abuse, defraud, or harm anyone
  • Attempt to access or interfere with other users' accounts or data

11. Your uploads and third-party rights

When you import a statement, receipt, CSV, PDF, or any other document into the Service (whether by upload, drag-and-drop, paste, or otherwise), you represent and warrant that:

  • You have the legal right to use, upload, and process that content
  • The content does not infringe any third party's copyright, trademark, trade-secret, privacy, or other rights
  • The content complies with applicable law

Trove does not review, moderate, or monitor the content you import. We process your uploads solely to provide the Service to you — for example, parsing a PDF statement to extract transactions, then returning those transactions to your browser or your own cloud-storage account. Where the AI-parsing feature is invoked, your PDF is briefly transmitted to our third-party AI provider for extraction only, as described in our Privacy Policy.

Indemnification. You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Trove and its operators from and against any claim, loss, liability, damage, cost, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from or related to (a) content you import into the Service or (b) your violation of the representations in this Section, including claims of copyright, trademark, or other intellectual-property infringement, defamation, invasion of privacy, or breach of applicable law.

Reporting infringement. If you believe content processed through the Service infringes your copyright or other rights, email support@householdtrove.com with sufficient detail to identify the content and the alleged infringement. Because Trove does not host public user-generated content — uploads live in your own browser and (if enabled) your own cloud-storage account — takedown of specific files typically requires you to contact the account holder directly. We will cooperate in good faith with valid legal process.

12. Intellectual property

Trove (the brand, the application code, the design) is owned by us. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the Service for personal, non-commercial purposes while your subscription is active. Your data remains yours.

13. Service availability

We aim to keep the Service available but do not guarantee uptime. We may temporarily suspend the Service for maintenance, security, or updates. Trove relies on third-party providers, and outages or changes by those providers may affect the Service.

14. No financial advice

Trove is a recordkeeping tool. Nothing in the Service constitutes financial, tax, legal, or investment advice. Numbers may be inaccurate due to import errors, miscategorisation, or bugs. Use the Service to inform your decisions; never as the sole basis for them. Always verify against your bank and credit card statements.

15. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the calculations it performs are accurate for your situation.

16. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability arising out of or related to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost profits, lost data, or loss of goodwill.

17. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these Terms or use the Service in a way that creates risk for us, our providers, or other users. You may close your account at any time by emailing us or cancelling through the Stripe customer portal.

18. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia, Canada, and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Subject to Section 19 (Dispute resolution), the courts of British Columbia have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes that arise.

19. Dispute resolution — arbitration and class action waiver

Please read this Section carefully. It affects your legal rights. It requires you to resolve most disputes with us through individual arbitration rather than in court, and waives your right to bring a class action.

Binding individual arbitration. Any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms — including their formation, validity, interpretation, or breach — shall be resolved through binding individual arbitration rather than in a court of general jurisdiction, except as provided below.

Class-action waiver. You and Trove agree that any dispute will be resolved through individual arbitration only. You waive any right to participate in a class action, class arbitration, consolidated action, or other representative proceeding against Trove. The arbitrator may not consolidate more than one person's claims or preside over any form of representative proceeding.

Procedure. Arbitration shall be conducted by a single arbitrator in accordance with the rules of ADR Chambers Canada (or a comparable Canadian arbitration provider agreed by the parties). The arbitration shall be conducted in English and seated in Vancouver, British Columbia, unless the parties agree otherwise. The arbitrator's decision is final and binding.

Carve-outs. Notwithstanding the above, either party may (a) bring a claim in a small-claims court of competent jurisdiction if the claim qualifies under that court's rules, and (b) seek urgent injunctive or equitable relief in court for actual or threatened intellectual-property infringement or unauthorised use of the Service. These carve-outs do not create a right to bring or participate in a class action.

30-day opt-out. You may opt out of this Section 19 by emailing support@householdtrove.com within thirty (30) days of first accepting these Terms (or, for existing users, within thirty days of this Section's effective date), with the subject line "Arbitration Opt-Out" and stating the email address associated with your account. If you opt out, disputes will instead be resolved under Section 18 (Governing law). Opting out does not affect any other portion of these Terms.

Severability. If any portion of this Section is found unenforceable under applicable law, the remainder of this Section and these Terms shall remain in effect to the fullest extent permitted, except that if the class-action waiver is found unenforceable in a particular case, that case shall proceed in court under Section 18 rather than in arbitration.

20. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If changes are material, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you by email. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
